The mission of The Institute of Church Ministry (ICM) is to share the expertise and resources of Andrews University and the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary with the Adventist church in North America, thus aiding denominational decision-makers and facilitating the larger church in the accomplishment of its goals. The work of ICM is based on the belief that the tools of social science can join with Biblical and theological insights in advancing the objectives of the church. The purpose of ICM is to provide resources for ministry in meeting the challenges of a variety of issues in the contemporary world. This mission and purpose are carried out through research, publications, development of materials, information processing, and consultation.


The concept of the Institute of Church Ministry began in 1978 when the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists (NAD) asked Andrews University Seminary professor, Des Cummings, Jr., to direct a study of church growth within the Division. The need for empirical research in the field of church ministry became apparent, thus prompting the establishment of ICM at the November 1979 meeting of the Andrews University Board of Trustees. The Institute officially opened on January 1, 1980. Des Cummings, Jr. served as director until August 1984. Roger L. Dudley, emeritus professor of Christian Ministry at the Seminary, has served as director since then.

ICM is located on the lower floor of the Seminary building, room S136. It includes space for the director, administrative assistant, student assistants, important records, and research materials. In 1984, ICM entered into a sustaining relationship with the North American Division (NAD) which has continued to be its major client.

In cooperation with the Center for Youth Evangelism (CYE) Team—the Director is responsible for the development of the ICM and its ongoing management. The Director must possess an ability to think strategically, delegate responsibility, listen carefully, build consensus, and communicate and advocate effectively. 


  • Doctorate preferred; MA essential plus significant experience in applied research.  Field ministry experience also considered.
  • Must possess strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and demonstrate outstanding leadership.
  • Responsible for organizing and conducting research projects.
  • Have experience in collaborative research projects.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with academic audiences.
  • Ability to interpret data and terminology for administrators, ministers, and teachers
  • Ability to design and produce training materials for minister, administrators, and teachers, including presenting at conferences, giving workshops, and publishing papers.
  • Highly flexible team player with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to administer affirmative action policies effectively and participate and supervise in a culturally diverse workplace.
  • Ability to lead research teams.
  • Non-judgmental, open-hearted attitude towards research.
  • Participate in planning and setting ICM goals that assist in meeting the CYE strategic plan.
  • Extensive knowledge of advanced prospect research techniques and reference materials.
  • Strong analytical skills, including expertise in the modeling and analysis of data.
  • Five or more years’ experience.

  • Record of publication in academic journals and publications

  1. Provide general direction and supervision of the Institute
  2. Cast a vision of the mission of the Institute
  3. Solicit contracts for the work of the Institute
  4. Manage research requests made on behalf of denominational organizations
  5. Be responsible for the billing of research jobs
  6. Manage the budget
  7. Hire appropriate staff
  8. Attend major gatherings in order to network with potential clients
  9. Regular progress meetings and other management-related responsibilities.
  10. Safeguard the confidentiality of staff information at all times

Project management

  1. Work with clients to develop questionnaire items
  2. Work with clients to determine research designs appropriate to meet client objectives
  3. Design and implement research and development projects
  4. Set timelines and allocate work to the team members to ensure the project is completed on time
  5. Supervise the collection of data
  6. Review work to maintain a high standard of quality and productivity and assess performance. 
  7. Write drafts of the research reports

Other duties

  1. Provide internal leadership to the Institute and represent the ICM to external stakeholders
  2. Give wide publicity to the work of the Institute
  3. Do other tasks that benefit the SDA Theological Seminary and Andrews University
